About Your Surgery

Pre-Op Instructions

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight if your surgery is in the morning. If your surgery is after 1 PM, you may have clear liquids (coffee, tea, water, jello, chicken broth, apple or grape juice) six (6) hours prior to arrival.
  • If you normally take heart or blood pressure medicine in the morning, take them with 1 oz. of water the day of surgery. Do not take diuretics that cause you to go to the bathroom frequently.
  • If you are diabetic, please remember no food and no diabetic pill. If you are insulin dependent, you should call 316-612-1072 or toll free 1-888-654-8373 for instructions.
  • Wear comfortable clothes that are easy for you to put on in a sedated state. Please wear a shirt that buttons up the front if you having eye or nose surgery.
  • Please shower, shampoo, and brush your teeth. Please do not apply cosmetics, lotions, and especially no eye makeup. Do not wear any jewelry or valuables and please remove any body piercing items.
  • It is IMPERATIVE that you have a ride home and someone to stay with you for 24 hours. It is illegal for you to drive after sedation.
  • Please bring anything you may need for surgery, including: crutches, x-rays or reading glasses.. Children supplies may include: diapers, clean baby bottle, sippy cup, and a favorite toy or stuffed animal.
  • Please bring any papers you may have received from the doctor's office, your insurance card, a method to pay your co-pays (if required), and a photo ID.
  • A parent or legal guardian must be in the building at all times with any patients that are 17 years old or younger. Please bring any legal or guardianship papers if you are a designated legal guardian.
  • Please bring a urine specimen If you are a female of child bearing age,

Post-Op Instructions

  • Do not drive, operate machinery, sign important papers, or drink alcoholic beverages for 24 hours, or while taking pain medication.
  • For your safety, we strongly urge that a responsible adult stay with you the day of surgery and during the first night.
  • At the time of discharge, you will be given a postage paid comment card asking you to rate your overall experience at Surgicare of Wichita. We would appreciate you taking the time to complete and mail this card. Our quality improvement program reviews all cards and we welcome your comments and suggestions.
  • Before you are discharged, you will receive written post-operative instructions specific to your surgery and physician that our nurse will review with you and your family or responsible person. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions regarding your post-operative care at this time.
  • You will receive a post-operative call from Surgicare. Please make sure you provide a phone number where we can call you.
  • Do not hesitate to call your physician or Surgicare should the need arise post-operatively.
